  • Supporting an innovative company in the business of finding economic, environmental and social value in the management of hazardous waste.

In the haz. waste industry Australia has historically followed the Linear Economy of "Take, Make, Dispose”. Disposal is mostly in landfill that does not permanently isolate the waste from the biosphere. This is not sustainable and should change. The relatively high standard of Australian lifestyles contributes to depleting finite reserves and creates many products that end up in landfills or in incinerators. Australia recycles approximately 25% of its high economic value hazardous waste. But what happens to the other 75% of waste that is difficult to recover?

Tellus is an innovative company in the business of finding economic, environmental and social value in some difficult to manage wastes.

Tellus supports the circular economy = "Take, Make, Recover this Generation or Store Safely for next Generation or Dispose Safely"

Tellus' is developing the Sandy Ridge and Chandler Licenced Facilities that are proposed geological repositories that can safely store or permanently isolate hazardous waste (resource)".

Governments globally are increasingly seeking alternative options to surface landfill of hazardous waste as they seek to remove these materials from society and improve long term environmental performance.

Geological repositories are considered by governments globally to have the ability to contain hazardous waste over the long term.

The waste materials should be viewed as a future valuable resource where opportunities get created for the materials to re-enter the circular economy or be stored safely until it can re-enter the economy or be permanently isolated.

Tellus Safety Case Facility Safety Case
Tellus Facilities are supported by a detailed safety case, covering operations, closure and post-closure.
Hazardous waste in Australia is regulated by the states and territories, which variously describe these waste types as controlled, trackable, prescribed, listed or regulated wastes.

Hazardous waste is waste that is a management problem by virtue of its toxicity or chemical or physical characteristics which make it difficult to dispose of or treat safely and is not suitable for disposal in a Class I, II, III or IV landfill, but is suitable in a geological repository (Class V).

Tellus is a wholesale service provider and is predominantly focused on industrial generated hazardous waste. Tellus' facilities are not open to the public (households).

Tellus will however receive household hazardous waste via reputable waste management companies that will collect hazardous waste from households and deliver it to Tellus facilities.

All waste types have strict acceptance criteria and require stringent handling, storage, recovery and permanent isolation methods.

Tellus has dedicated managers supported by independent NATA accredited laboratories on and off site that ensures that your materials are provided with the highest level of operational safety, quality and compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements.

Tellus does not provide waste collection and transportation service, but can recommend its preferred operators that use licenced truck and rail operators to transport the materials to the Tellus facility.

Acceptable waste
"Acceptable Waste" will mean Waste that is delivered and which meets the acceptance criteria pursuant to the relevant Conditions of Acceptance for the Nominated Licenced Facility (CANF).

The Waste Acceptance Proforma must be completed by waste owners to enable an assessment of waste suitability for storage or isolation at one of the Tellus facilities.

Unacceptable waste
Tellus' waste acceptance criteria details the properties and characteristics that deem wastes unsuitable for storage or disposal at Tellus' facilities.

Conditions of Acceptance for the Nominated Licenced Facility (CANF)
Refer to the Conditions of Acceptance for the Nominated Licenced Facility:

When it comes to hazardous waste, Tellus supports the circular economy where not only the relatively easy to manage “high economic value wastes - can follow the journey of moving from OLD to NEW again”, but we also create more opportunities for the much harder to manage “lower economic value wastes that can also follow the journey of moving from OLD to NEW again”.

Over time Tellus will develop successful recovery solutions with its service provider ("TellusRecovery©"). Read More »
