Tellus Holdings Pty Ltd ("Tellus") is an Australian-owned mining company with a portfolio of underground salt bed and salt dome formations. Tellus is the parent of a group of companies involved in the mining, processing and sales of industrial and edible salts and minerals. Potential complementary businesses include gourmet salt / bush food blends, storage in voids created by mining and using the salt for renewable energy (solar / salt battery).
These high purity salt beds were formed hundreds of millions of years ago from evaporated seas and have been buried by geological activity. Globally, today approximately 31% of modern salt is supplied from underground rock salt mines (rock salt). In Australia most salt comes from coastal seawater solar evaporation ponds (solar salt). These coastal ponds are at risk from flooding and contamination from heavy tropical rains and cyclones. Tellus’ high purity salt is underground in the Simpson Desert, away from heavy rains, cyclones and pollution, but well located near rail infrastructure to reach domestic and international salt markets.
Tellus is planning to develop Australia's first underground salt mine in what is possibly Australia’s biggest underground salt deposit. In Europe some salt mines have been mined for hundreds of years. Evidence from historic core drilling, seismic and recent Tellus core samples analysis show an exploration target of billions of tons of salt. Tellus's proposed salt mine could potentially support Australia's longest operational mine life, bringing investment, employment and environmental benefits to Central Australia for generations.
Tellus is a private company established in July 2009 with its head office in Sydney, NSW and a joint venture office in Perth, WA with plans to open up a project office in the NT in 2012. Tellus has a very experienced leadership team and works closely with a consortium of specialist companies with salt and storage expertise from Australia, USA and Canada.

Tellus has evaluated six geological basins in Australia with known salt formations and selected the Amadeus Basin in the Northern Territory as the location for its first project.
Within the Amadeus Basin, Tellus has evaluated nine areas with prospective thick salt bed and salt dome formations and has selected several sites that meet our criteria. Tellus has a number of exploration licences in the Amadeus Basin over salt beds that are close to the surface, close to infrastructure and accessible to domestic and export markets.
