Tellus Lodges Notice of Intent

  • Tellus executive’s return from successful marketing trip to Jakarta in Indonesia
  • Tellus Salt received expressions of interest for future salt supply
  • Tellus Salt enters into commercial negotiations with Indonesian salt buyers
  • Indonesia salt market is 3.5-4 million tonnes per annum and growing.

A key Tellus executive visited Jakarta, Indonesia, in November 2012 with follow up visits planned for 2013 to continue building the relationships established.

The visit by Sales and Marketing Executive Mike Carter led to expressions of interest from potential salt customers.

Tellus has commenced commercial negotiations and looks forward to developing long-term relationships for its proposed Chandler multi-mineral salt mine in central Australia. “We plan to export about one million tonnes per annum (1 Mtpa) of salt and associated minerals (fertilisers) to the Asian market,” Mr Carter said.

“The Indonesian salt market of 3.5-4 Mtpa is growing, along with the Indonesian GDP growth rate of 6.5% per annum.

“While the Indonesian Government has an objective of self-sufficiency in salt production in the long-term, Indonesian salt customers are particularly interested in the Chandler project’s salt quality, reliability of underground rock salt mine supply and the ability to scale the project up to meet rising demand. The reason they are interested is that existing Indonesian solar pond producers meet a third of salt demand and they can be severely affected by wet weather events,” Mr Carter said. “Indonesia’s proximity to Darwin makes it an important potential customer for the Territory’s resources industry,” he said.

According to statements by senior Northern Territory Government officials during a recent Asian trade delegation the NT Government:

  • identified mining and energy as one element of its three hub-economic development strategy
  • saw securing investment for local projects as a critical element of growing the mining and exploration sector in the Territory
  • expressed pride in its strong links with Indonesia, including relationships with key government organisations, universities and trading houses.
